چکیده

negatively affected by disturbance. meadow barley (Hordeum brachyantherum Nevski) (Hickman 1993). Purple needlegrass, blue wildrye, bluegrass and California melic are droughttolerant species that typically occupy well-drained upland sites. In contrast, creeping wildrye and meadow barley are less drought-tolerant and typically grow in the moist soils of seeps, streams and wetland margins (Walker 1992; Hickman 1993). Creeping wildrye and meadow barley are also flood-tolerant. California annual exotic grasslands are largely composed of the species Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), soft chess (Bromus hordeaceus L.), ripgut grass (Bromus diandrus Roth), wild oat (Avena fatua L.), medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae [L.] Nevski) and foxtail barley (Hordeum murinum L.). Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.) and broadleaf filaree (Erodium botrys [Cav.] Bertol.) form a large component of the associated invasive annual broadleaf biomass (Heady et al. 1992; Lulow 2004; Pitcairn et al. 2006). Except for yellow starthistle, all of these invasive species complete their life cycles by the time soils become dry in the summer

Release of Roadside Native Perennial Grasses following Removal of Yellow Starthistle

The ecological benefits of a roadside native perennial grass stand are :ompromised when invasive species become estab· lished. We evaluated the potential to regenerate existing native perennial grass stand5 populat~d with yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) on a roadside planting in the lowland hills of t1e interior Coast Range of northern California. The experiment was designed to dete...

Native Perennial Grasses in Highway Medians: Pre- and Postplant Techniques for Establishment in a Mediterranean Climate

Within highway rights-of-way, native perennial grasses provide desirable services to support natural and human constructed ecosystems. However, native perennial grass establishment in annual grass dominated roadsides of semiarid and Mediterranean climates of the western United States requires specific cultural and chemical management treatments to control weeds. In 2004, field studies were cond...

Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilizer and Topsoil Amendment on Native Plant Cover in Roadside Revegetation Projects.

Establishing vegetation on roadsides following construction can be challenging, especially for relatively slow growing native species. Topsoil is generally removed during construction, and the surface soil following construction ("cut-slope soils") is often compacted and low in nutrients, providing poor growing conditions for vegetation. Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) protocols ha...

Initial success of native grasses is contingent on multiple interactions among exotic grass competition, temporal priority, rainfall and site effects

Ecological communities are increasingly being recognized as the products of contemporary drivers and historical legacies that are both biotic and abiotic. In an attempt to unravel multiple layers of ecological contingency, we manipulated (i) competition with exotic annual grasses, (ii) the timing of this competition (temporal priority in arrival/seeding times) and (iii) watering (simulated rain...

Shrub Microsite Influences Post-fire Perennial Grass Establishment

Woody plants can cause localized increases in resources (i.e., resource islands) that can persist after fire. We tested the hypothesis that burned sagebrush subcanopies would have increased seedling establishment and performance of post-fire seeded perennial bunchgrasses compared to burned interspaces. We utilized five study sites in southeastern Oregon. The area was burned in a wildfire (2007)...
